Having recently refreshed their brand identity, we were delighted when ConnectTVT invited us to work with them again — this time on an exciting new project that celebrates the most innovative businesses in our region.
ConnectTVT organises The Festival of Digital Disruption, an annual event designed to help put the Thames Valley’s tech and digital businesses on the map and raise the profile of the region, and for 2016, the Festival was used as the launch platform for a brand new initiative — 50 Game Changers.
Each year, 50 Game Changers will recognise and celebrate the success of 50 innovative Thames Valley companies, and the inspiring people behind them. The inaugural event was held in May at Matchbox, Reading’s coolest cocktail bar and club, where the identities of the 2016 Game Changers were revealed to an audience of specially invited guests. As well as spotlighting exceptional work, the event was an opportunity for like-minded businesses from the area to come together, connect, and engage with each other.

Central to the event, and given to all guests and selected Game Changers, was the 50 Game Changers almanac. We love a design for print brief at Studio 18, so this was right up our street. As guardians of the ConnectTVT brand guidelines, we know their corporate identity inside out, so it was easy for us to ensure that the creative approach we took for the almanac was on brand.
Printed in full colour onto recycled stock, the first part of the 44 page, A4 format, high-quality publication features a foreword by ConnectTVT founder Louize Clark, information on sponsors, and a double-page illustrated map we created to pinpoint the location of high-tech business clusters in the Thames Valley’s burgeoning world-class ecosystem.
The rest of the almanac is given over to the Game Changers themselves. Selected from a wide range of businesses encompassing Big Data, Cyber Security, Data Management, Education Technology, Health Technology, Space Technology, and much more, each one is represented by a photo image and a short profile.
Overall, design is clean, sharp and contemporary, putting the focus clearly on the Game Changers. For consistency and simplicity, we created a grid style format for the profile pages so that copy — edited and supplied to us by Antonia Taylor PR — could easily be dropped into place. To add interest and engage the readers’ attention, a mix of photo styles and logos is used throughout, and we introduced small changes to each double page spread, using blocks of copy explaining exactly what it takes to be a Game Changer, and facts about the tech community, supported by icons for additional clarity. Finally, on the last spread, we created an impactful montage made out of all the Game Changers’ profile pics.
In addition to designing the almanac, Studio 18 coordinated and managed all aspects of print and production.
As an official partner of ConnectTVT, we were invited to attend the launch event for 50 Game Changers. We made the most of the unique chance to network with some of the most exciting new businesses in the Thames Valley, and made some great new connections.
We wish each of the Game Changers all the best as they develop and grow their businesses, and we’re already looking forward to working with ConnectTVT on next year’s event.
